In 1995, Christine Becker founded The Moving Body. Initially, two faculty members taught The Pilates Method and the Gyrotonic Expansion System®.
Our teaching staff and our schedule of classes have grown naturally to respond to students’ needs. Currently, The Moving Body faculty members offer private and semi-private sessions each day (by appointment only) and Pilates mat classes that are held several times each week.
Our Facilities and Equipment
When you come to The Moving Body, you’ll find a serene environment for focused bodywork and movement. We’ve emphasized green materials and choices during renovations of our 1799 farmhouse. Upgrades – such as installing a new furnace and air conditioning system, refinishing and polishing our wide-beam pine floors, Oriental and hand-loomed rugs, natural lighting and freshly painted walls in soft colors – have enhanced the original character and warmth of our historic building.
Over the past few years, we’ve purchased new equipment for Pilates and Gyrotonic® classes held throughout the building. We now have:
- Reformers (5)
- Trapeze Table/Cadillac
- Combo Chairs (3)
- Ladder Barrels (3)
- Wall Units with Mats (3)
- Physioballs, Magic Circles, Floor Mats, other small equipment
- Gyrotonic® Tower/Pulley Combination Unit
In our small in-house store, you may purchase mats, foam rollers and other small equipment, and some clothes; we eventually plan to stock a selection of books and other resource materials.
Pilates Teacher Training Program
We established our Pilates Teacher Training Program in 1997. By 2006, it had developed into a 600-hour Pilates Teacher Training Program that meets the stringent PMA requirements.
Trainees attend classes and work in our new classroom and resource library, and use a full range of new teaching tools and equipment, such as skeletal models and extensive multimedia materials for their studies in anatomy, kinesiology, physiology and repertoire.
Continuing Education Programs & Community Outreach
Since the summer of 2000, we have offered workshops on a wide range of topics, including ‘Advanced Reformer,’ ‘Breathing,’ ‘Spirals on the Reformer,’ ‘Osteoporosis Workout,’ ‘Anatomy of Movement,’ and ‘What is the Pelvic Floor’? Our continuing education program is open to all; we are fervent believers in lifelong learning and encourage our students to take part. You’ll find a listing of upcoming workshops at Special Events.
We’ve also conducted after-school enrichment and summer camp programs at Woodstock Day School and St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church; internship programs for home school students; and Pilates mat workshops for young skaters and dancers at Boundless Edge Skating School and Saugerties Ballet School.
If you’d like to find out more about these workshops and community programs, please give us a call.

I like the space, lovely setting, and its casual nature. Seeing a bear out the back window was grand.
